I doubt if they were expected calls because that never applied on close tag plays on steals so I guess the umpires just saw something different that what happened. Wasnt the first times this has happened and it wont be the last -- its like the magiciand say the hand is quicker than the eye.

From the angle of the umpire both probably looked like tags.

I think I would probably have an out for both without the multiple camera angles as well. The first one is very close plus the overslide didn't help. The second one probably looked very close to a tag from his proper position.

So, for both, I think the umpires called what they saw though the calls weren't popular.

I was following a recent thread on the question you raise on another board.

The thread quickly degenerated into an exercise in sanctimony and insult. There were a lot of firmly held opinions, but not much actual discussion.

I never posted on that thread, but I did think about it some.

I finally realized that when I am working a game, I never pause to consider what the "expected call" might be in any given situation before making my call.

Fairchild launched Baker.

Holbrook sent Corrales(Nationals Bench Coach).

West ejected Johnson.

Miller ousted Quade.

I wonder what the record for ejections in a day is not including fights or HBP where you get a two-for.

The Umpire Ejection Fantasy League has this call as being INCORRECT ....but man .....in the super-slo, ...it almost looks like DeRosa's arm falls on the mitt just before (millisecond) his hands hits the bag.... could have gone either way...

Watch Bellino see the missed tag ....go for the safe signal, then stop realizing the DeRosa overslid .....great video!

That was an awesome clip.

I love the way Bellino jumps on the call and stands behind it all the way. No doubt about what he saw. Right or wrong. That said, I tilt toward CORRECT CALL here, because Bellino sells it like crazy.

I would argue that Bellino's timing was a tad bit to fast. The start of the safe signal then stopping gives the impression of indecision, even though he is right on top of the play. Let the action stop before you make a call. He had an outstanding angle on the play..... but I wouldn't recommend that positioning for plays at second unless your working 4 man :-)

He starts to call him safe then decides to make one call on the overslide. This goes directly to another discussion whether to make two calls or one. He decided that he was safe on the slide but since he overslid so Bellino waited to rule on the second play.
