You almost have to tell that story...How does that happen?

I've heard of a game called on gas fumes, when a minor league team soaked the infield with gas and burned it to dry it out after a week of rain, and the PU passed out after the second pitch

Then a game in Oregon that was called when a fan saw a whale off the coast and everyone-players and coaches included-left the field to watch it.

But a rock slide...did it just take out the whole field?

It took out the highway between the visitors and the home team.

They could have driven around it, but it would have added about 1/2 day's drive each way, so they decided to reschedule it.

LOL I love stories like this... especially being a new Oregon resident. First thought I had was Astoria. But might have also been down in the Coos Bay area. I have to find out now.

Im a little disappointed in how this story turned out. Sounds like it should have been that the rockslide ended up covering the ball field. Would have made a better story.

Well let us all know when that happens to you. :hopmad: ;)

Im thinking it will just be rain for me this season. However, if I do run into a rockslide covering a ballfield... You will be first to know.

What I'd want to see is the cliffs it came down from... and then I want to meet the person who decided that it was a good idea to build a baseball field at the base of a cliff. :hopmad:

Not so much of a problem up here in Portland. But I have noticed that my former state has major issues with building things, under and on top of, unstable cliffs.

I think all the sunshine had bleached their brains.

Just found the news story on CNN.com. 200 mile detour...Hope you didn't have to go that way for awhile. Be a good excuse to...:hopmad:

I realize that probably isn't relevant. But I couldn't pass up the opportunity to use the new smiley.

Hope you get back out there soon

To be honest I'm not even dead sure it was Oregon. It was either there or Washington. But I THINK it was oregon. It was in a book of old umpire war stories my dad gave me when I was 11 or 12. I wonder if I can find it, come to think of it. Now that I'm an ump, I'll bet I appreciate them a little more ;)

Could be Washington. As far as I know, they get more of the migrating whales there than we do here in Oregon. My thinking would be the Puget Sound area if it was.

Would seriously love to check out this book if you can find the name of it.

Just called my dad to ask him to poke around in my bookshelf. He didn't come up with that particular book, but with the sheer volume of books i have back home, it could be anywhere, and I'll let you know if he runs across it. Otherwise I'll make a concerted effort to find it next time I'm there. It was a great read. Chicken Soup for the Baseball Fan's Soul has a few good chapters on umpires, and both of those incidents were mentioned in there, although not really in depth at all.

Sorry Brian, if this carries on I promise we'll move to the books forum :hopmad:
