I don't know. Don't know what U3 saw from his angle is all I can say. I wonder if the glove disappeared from his angle before R2's hand touched and that is what he went by. That is my only assumption.

My question is why is he in fair territory? Isn't it better to be in foul territory to have an angle on when the glove does actually touch the runner? Wasn't he shielded from that fact by being in fair territory? Without a 4 man manual, I am asking b/c I thought most take this play in foul territory but I could be wrong.

He must have been blocked out...the camera didn't give us angles from anywhere else except where the umpire wasn't.

the clips make more sense to me ....not that I know proper 4 man positioning, but ...just in a logical sense

Well, as I posted on there, I can find more with U3 in foul territory. Cuzzi was in the wrong place. He should have been in foul territory. Then, if he missed, nothing to say other than "He just missed it". But, since he was too far in fair territory, he positioned himself poorly.

I love how the announcers say "The umpire was in perfect position". Just more of how they don't pay attention to the game they commentate. If they did, they would know he is in the worst position. The only way to make it worse would be to be farther from the line than he already is.

Everything I've been taught in 3-man says to take this in foul territory.

Guys think of where he (u4) was at the time of pitch--he was a good 8 to 10 feet behind 3rd base--if he went into foul area he would have to look through the 3rd baseman--close call but he blew it

No he wouldn't. F5 was on the HP side of 3B. He would have had a great clean look like this umpire did on a similar play except the runner was later. Also, many start exactly where U3 In the OP was except they hustle to get closer to 3B sooner and get a proper angle on the play. He didn't just miss it. He missed it b/c he didn't position himself properly for a routine play.

It is pretty easy making calls after you watch frame by frame video replays...

I understand, .... I had it safe all day long at full speed from the replays. Not that I'm a pro, or better than anyone else...it just seemed so obvious to me. Do we all screw up? Hell yes ...me included .....but.......
