I got home today after completing a week at Cooperstown Dreams Park.

Made some great new life long friends and the camaraderie there is second to none.

I would go back anytime.

Recap of the week

We had a five man crew assigned to Field 7.

Field 7 was a web cam field which was great.

We worked a lot of 3 man crews for games with 5 games a day on our schedule.

Did one plate a day.

My Crew Chief got the Plate assignment for the Championship game.

Great job Ryan.

Another good new and now life long friend, crew member and bunk house mate, Justin got a Semi Game.

I would work any where at anytime with either of them and am sure they feel the same way.

Also met 2 great guys named Sam and Willie.

They are always at CDP.

I now count them among my life long friends.

There is never a dull moment when they are around.

Some of the calls I made this week.

I am BU, Justin is on the dish, 2 man crew.

R2 and R3. 1 Out.

Batter hits ball towards SS who is run over by R2.

I immediately call Time, that's interference your out. BR is also out.

VT Manager requests a Directors Call since he doesn't believe I have it right.

Director comes out and doesn't think I got it right.

Gets rulebook....hmmmmm I am right call stands.

Called a Catchers Interference on a batter.

Call a batter out for stepping on the plate when he bunted.

Called about 4 balks.

We had R1 get hit by ground ball for 3rd out.

Had R2 and R3

F1 picks off R3.

Then throws one pitch and then picks off R2.

Two IFR in one inning.

During semi final had a very close fair ball when I was LF Ump.

Also had a diving catch by LF coming towards me on the line and had to make the call call.

That's a catch. With out a 6 man crew it might have been a tough call from anywhere else.

Worked 2 pool play games with #1 Seed and Elite 8 Game with them.

Was a good game where they came back from a 6 run deficit in the 5th inning.

They also won the Championship game 4 - 3 and it was a great game.

Had a girl F2 who had a arm and gunned down the first runner that tried to steal on her.

She then came up to bat and hit a bomb to Center Field.

Not only a real good catcher but she was a great ball player.

Yes CDP only has 200 foot fences and there were a lot of HRs.

One game had 8.

But the faces of the kids, parents and grand parents is priceless when they hit one.

Love the way the spectators are out down the lines and the field are closed in.

No parents around picking at your strike zone from behind.

Great fields.

My 3 daughters, wife and mother in law all got to watch me work games via web cam broadcasts.

My 3, 6 and 8 year old's thought it was great daddy was umpiring on TV.

Wife said my butt looked sexy.

Several of you watched and I appreciate your messages that you felt I did a good job on the plate.

Managers and coaches are cool and were cooperative.

Get tossed from a game at CDP and your banned for life.

You get escorted to your bunk house to pack and off the property.

Definitely was the most enjoyable week of umpiring I have ever had.

While there were all levels of umpires there, (yes some of them did not belong there) the friendship and brotherhood is priceless.

If you needed anything all you had to do was ask and someone pulled it out.

I will go back at least once every year.

To all my brothers from Week 6, 2011 Cooperstown Dreams Parks thanks for the memories.

To the Alta Loma Storm thanks for the opportunity.

It was a experience I will never forget and am very grateful to have been given the chance to do.

Help me out. Can't find where you get 2 on the interference on the runner from 2nd.

Posted

7.08b pertains to a runner standing on a base and you also have to judge the interference intentional.

Posted

7.08b does not only apply to a runner in contact with a base.

Yes it was judged intentional since he made no effort to avoid the short stop while he was trying to field the ball.

Read the comment section.

So Lou you thought the runner intentionally ran into the SS? Did you eject R2 for the actions? This is a slipperly slope. You have to have compelling evidence that R2 absolutely did it on purpose before you bang 2. 99.9% of the time, the runner is just in the wrong place @ the wrong time. I'm not getting on you Lou, and of coarse i wasnt at your game. It just sounds funny to bang 2 on this play.

There's a difference between "intentional" and "malicious." All malicious actions are intentional, but not all intential actions are malicious.

You don't eject a kid at Cooperstown nor a coach unless it is absolutely necessary

Ejections there are not for the game plus anything else, ejections there are for life.

You pack, you leave and you never return in any capacity.

Not malicious and he could have avoided the short stop.

The kids sit a 2 game suspension

The coaches get the "death penalty"

Also they take your team picture and photoshop your image away forever!

Great recap Lou and congrats on having such a great week! I was invited by a team to go the week of August 7th, but am behind at work and can't take the time off. I am hoping to take a trip out there next summer. I'm jealous!

The umpire experience at CDP is priceless. I went 4 years ago and have gone back every year since ( with or without a team sponsor) and will continue to go every year (with or without a team sponsor) until they tell me I can't. I would recommend it to anyone who has never made the pilgramage. One of the best baseball/umpire experiences I've ever had. Semper Fi hit it right on the head...
