Co-workers question makes me think....

Hi guys, ...

A co-worker came to me this morning with a sitch from his sons u14 game. Best described.... his son, ground ball to F6, bad throw takes F3 in front of first to short hop a throw [towards home side of first] ....his son side steps F3 [infield side] and gets to first, but u1 calls him out for being out of the baseline. Now, ....I know the call is probably wrong, but it's not the cause for this post, .....here it is...I just want a quick clarification....

With F3 in the way, fielding a throw .....lets say that the runner just barrels him over, or ...there's a train wreck....

trainwreck is nothing I know, .... but do we have interference if there's anything more? Isn't it on a batted ball, or can it happen on fielding a ball? And if so, ...does it have to be intentional?

And yes, the out of the baseline call is wrong. He side-stepped the kid to avoid running him over, not to evade a tag. Thus, he is merely redefining his baseline to avoid contact. Or at least, that's how your post reads.

Thanks, ...and yes, that's what I was decribing based on how it was described to me, ...I concur there.

Anything more.... I don't know, sorry.... let me put it this way....

Can you have INT on the BR on a "thrown" ball, just like a 'batted' ball?

So, it's either NOTHING [trainwreck] ... or it's INT [ intentional on a thrown ball] .... that's what I thought....like the OP says, ... the description of the sitch made me want a clarification...I thought I knew it ...but sometimes you think too much and ....you can't remember ! :cheers:

Depending on the rules which are being used you could also have malicious contact or obstruction but most often this will just be nothing.

Yes he was in the act of fielding the poor throw from F6 which brought him in front of first causing the BR to 'sidestep' him .... can't be OBS ....

First basemen have to have quick reactions of their hands and feet to all sorts of bad throws...the worse ones are into the batter-runner's path. I saw one 14 year old take a throw from the foul side of 1B and as he reached out for the ball, the BR ran right into his outstretched glove, and sent it down the right field line. The ball hit F3 right in the gut. It happened very quickly, and F3 was stunned as he looked into the dugout to see if his coach wanted him to switch positions.
