I can remember when NBCSports did this for a single game back in the 1980s, I think it was. They had no one in the booth to call play-by-play, nor did they have a "color commentator" to explain the obvious. The only time anything was said was to explain a perhaps odd call by the officials, and then at the end of each quarter, a quick overview we provided to update the viewers on how each team scored their points.

I thought it was a pretty novel idea, but of course, no good deed goes unpunished. That experiment lasted just one game, and I believe it spawned a whole new generation of the now-common 3 men in the booth, all bleating away like sheep on a hillside. :clap:

If only Vin Scully could be the announcer for every single game on TV and Radio. For me, that would be a dream come true!

True, but at the time, they were the only ones doing it, and it was a bit of a show unto itself - - Howard Cosell v. Don Meridith, as Frank Gifford stayed focused on the game.

Now, they all do it, and it's usually three who are just awful, and by the amount of blather they produce, you'd think they were paid by the word.

Also, another thing about football is that there are a lot more games now that are regional telecasts, as opposed to years ago when it was just one or two games on Sunday that were national. That means - MORE announcers. :clap:

Ken Coleman and Johnny Pesky used to be a great team when they worked WHDH radio for the Red Sox games back in the 60s and 70s. Even on the radio, they shut up often enough to where you could actually hear the crack of the bat, the pop of the mitt, and the crowd noises - - right down to hearing a vendor... "Peaaaaaa-- NUTS! Get ya peanuts heeYAH!"

These clown on TV - the constant idiotic yammering, just to hear themselves talk, it's aggravating to no end. HEY, guys! WE CAN SEE THE GAME, TOO, STUPID! Sometimes I wonder what game THEY'RE watching!
