Chant with-em.

Sorry, I couldn't resist ... the chanting and team spirit is one of the reasons I enjoy doing softball when I get the chance. Too bad it pays about half what I get for baseball.

And lest I get tagged as a moneygrubber, every dollar I get right now for umpiring is a dollar less out of the savings account, since the job situation is sorely lacking at the moment.

Yeah, nothing you can do about it. I miss at least the small amount of chatter that you could do during baseball games. Now it sounds like the players aren't even there.

Don't sweat it. I don't remember the entire context of the "moneygrubber" thread, but here's the thing: umpiring is like a regular job/avocation. Some are good at it, some aren't. Granted, everyone that logs into this site is an excellent umpire, but there have to be the other guys out there, that make us - the upper half - possible!! :smachhead::):banghead: And some are doing the work for the money. Or they aren't that good, so other people feel like they're stealing what they get paid. Or something.

I'll say this: I don't work for free, except in rare occasions. I worked for nearly nothing when I first umpired - girls fastpitch in Hawaii, and when I resumed the baseball side in Australia, I didn't get near the market price I get here in Hampton Roads, but I won't generally work for nothing. My time, even if only to me, has value. If anyone out there does work for nothing, well, bless your heart for that. That's not me.

So don't take the moneygrubber stuff too much to heart, and if it's helping put food on the table or keeping the savings account afloat, one does what one must.

Yea,

There are $$$ whores in my chapter. However, I just found out (like myself) we have almost 20% unemployment in our chapter. :wow:Our assignor has no problems finding an umpire even on the busiest days. So, I may rethink my opinion of those of us money grubbers. Just kidding, an umpire never changes his mind.:banghead:

Anyway, I don't work for free. My time is valuable. I put in lots of time off the field improving myself. I am a regular reader here. This site is perfect for us. I read a lot also. So for those of you doing the little guys God Bless You.:smachhead:

Im in both lists. Lost my job in March and have been making a living the last two and half months working games. So yes, I do do it for the money. I also do not work for free because, especially now, my time is money.

Hey Shiny, just the mere fact that you take the time to come to sites like this to share your experiences and learn new things, DEFINITELY makes you NOT a moneygrubber. Kudos to you for doing any level that is offered, and here's hoping your job status changes soon!
