I found this post on "Medical / Umpire Question" interesting and have nominated it accordingly for "Post Of The Month June, 2009"

this happened (w/out the INPH part) the very 1st travel game I umpired years back! for some reason i guessed right and made no call...and looked it up as soon as I got home!

u10 girls softball....are there rules or guidelines on how to handle loud and annoying chants made by the offensive team while the pithcer is pitching?

unless its a big hitter and he thinks he can get the run in better than the next batter

doesnt the offensive coach get a choice of putting the batter up again or having him go to 1st (in the original post)?

can you help me understand what it means that a runner must get at least one base in type A obstruction? for example, lets say the shortstop blocks the bag before receiving the throw on a steal of second...does the runner get 3rd?

one out runner on 1st...dropped 3rd, coach yells "run to 1st"...kid runs and runner on 1st runs for 2nd...do i have anything on the batter runner? does the answer depend on what the catcher does? does it depend on "intent to deceive?" i'm talking asa softball but i'd love to hear opinions in any rule set...in my game today (u14) the catcher did nothing (kind of double clutched towards 1st and then just held it) and the coach wanted me to call the runner out or at least send her back to 1st...i left her on 2nd...i dont have access to my rulebook so hope someone can provide the answer and rule..thanks

would the answer be any different in Little League baseball?

Passed ball (u-12 rec league girls)....runner from 3rd tries to score...catcher goes and gets ball (only a few feet behind her) and runs towards the plate and lunges/falls over the plate...the ball is in her throwing hand and her glove hand is extended breaking her fall and landing right in front of the plate..the runner slides into the glove, blocked from the plate, and the girls buts the tag on her with the ball.....obstruction?

asa states that the look back rule does not go into effect for any runner until the batter runner has reached 1st base....so, runner on 3rd, base on balls......the ball is returned to the circle and the b/r rounds 1st and slowly continues to 2nd.....does the runner at 3rd have to get back to the base if the pitcher does not make a play on the b/r..is that a dumb question?

warren...have you ever seen a situation where the rules call for "down by xx runs after having completed its 5th at bat" - that allows for the game to be over w/out the equal number of at bats, as long as its after 5?

in high school (NJ) baseball and/or softball....is there a mercy rule that says that the game is over when a team is down by 10 or more afetr it has completed its 5th at bat? and if that is the case, does that mean that if the visiting team is up by 9 in the top of the 6th and they score a run, is the game over? thank you

Lets say the runner, scoring, crashes into the catcher (who does not have the ball and is obstructing). Can/would I have reason to eject the runner? does the level mater? if I DO eject him, does the run count (assuming he touched the plate after he/she knocked down the catcher?
