An obviously famous play but I just noticed for the first time how many positions HP goes through in this play, starts in 1BLX, goes to 3BLX, back to 1BLX, eventually to 3BL http://wapc.mlb.com/cutfour/2013/11/26/64225226/hall-of-fame-ballot-announcement-we-remember-greg-maddux-dancing-around-home-plate

Replacement umpires, but how do they miss this?
Concernedcitizen2 replied to Concernedcitizen2's topic in Professional
Here's an even more extreme delay, which included a brawl because of a disputed foul ball/home run http://youtu.be/qAhzFOBKrE8 -
Is this just the baseball culture of the 70s making umpires reluctant to conference and overturn a call like we see so often today?

MLB Tests Expanded Instant Replay at Arizona Fall League
Concernedcitizen2 replied to ricka56's topic in Professional
At the end of the clip they say the umpire's truck said they were reviewing to see if he dropped it on the transfer, but to me, it looks like they should have reviewed the "neighborhood play" aspect of this as well. What do you guys think, will this still be an out next year? http://wapc.mlb.com/play?content_id=31215609&topic_id=26271672 -
Yeah, it seems like DeMuth just ruled "Safe" without a "time" signal, which probably lead to some of the confusion on the field. I think it would be better to do "out" then "time" then point to Joyce then point to the runner and point to the plate emphatically. But again, I essentially have no umpiring experience (nothing I've been paid for) Just a question, why is the obstruction supposed to be pointed with the left hand?
-
One more thing, I noticed in the replays that Joyce kind of had his head on a swivel. I assume this is because he's used to having responsibility for a ball being interfered with by a fan in the regular season 4 man rotation. But in this case, should his head have been locked in on the runner/fielder to ensure that he is able to see the whole obstruction situation. In the 6 man isn't the LF ump responsible for fan interference? I have no idea if I am right, I'm just asking for opinions...
-
Wondering what the correct mechanic on this would be, did DeMuth get it right? Should he have unemphatically signaled "out" and then pointed to Joyce and emphatically signaled safe. Since it is type B, isn't the play supposed to be played out and then the umpire determines that he would have been safe? So shouldn't he have been out and then cite the obstruction to signal safe?
-
Doesn't seem to be any call or really much of a reaction from either team. Have the rules been modified to only allow this at the plate? Or are they still allowed to just barrel over the ss/2b? If that's the case, why don't we see it more often...

Wow, how did MLB rule this was a non-issue then, even if they use the rosin defense seems pretty clear cut that it's a violation

Do you guys think the play at the plate from game 1 will be an out or safe under IR?
-
Any chance we'll get an official explanation from MLB on this?

Sorry if this link has been posted before. The person who posted this video blames it all on the umpires. Most of the commenters side with the umpire. Your thoughts? http://youtu.be/-7YtrR33aMg

Never seen an umpire do the hands on head move. Is there just no way he can correct himself and rule safe?

http://wapc.mlb.com/play?content_id=30918583 Batter called out for getting hit by a batted ball "out of the box." Looks like it's a blown call. As the OC comes out to argue, the DC makes a pitching change. So I have two scenarios, both of them assume the pitching change has been registered, the pitcher on the mound goes into the dugout, the new pitcher trots in from the bullpen. 1. What if the umpires get together and overturn the call. Would the old pitcher be allowed to continue pitching to the current batter? 2. Next year, what if the pitcher is changed, and then the OC comes out and issues a challenge and the call gets overturned? Would the old pitcher be allowed to come back out? Or will there be some sort of rule, like the NFL, that once a new pitcher has entered, the previous play can't be reviewed (like the NFL's rule that once a new play has started the previous play can't be reviewed). Will this lead to DC coming out and making a quick pitching change (similar to how NFL teams try to get up to the line and snap the ball right away after a controversial call)?

Is there a rule against this?
Concernedcitizen2 replied to Concernedcitizen2's topic in Professional
Obviously given the situation, I don't think anything could have happened, just wondering if it would be okay for a similar situation to happen in a random game in the middle of June. Just curious as to the rule, in this situation I agree nothing should have been enforced. -
Mariano being taken out by a trip to the mound by Jeter and Petitte. Obviously, given the circumstances, the umpire wasn't going to intervene. I know that a player is allowed to conduct a mound visit. But is it okay for two players (not a player and a trainer or a player and an interpreter) to make a mound visit? http://wapc.mlb.com/play?content_id=30974179&topic_id=11493214

Isn't there a rule saying that if a batter hits a home run and is unable to round the bases, a pinch runner may be substituted for him? I remember hearing this in the minors that somebody hit a home run and then fainted on his way to first, a pinch runner then finished his trip around the bases. Could a pinch runner (or whoever his replacement was) have been put in to finish the last 30 feet?

I assume the turn is the jerk he makes at 44 seconds, do you guys have an out here? http://wapc.mlb.com/play?content_id=30686121

So are you saying it's voluntary abandonment (or whatever the correct term is) similar to a batter going back into the dugout on a dropped third strike even if he was never tagged? And therefore the fact that he enters the dugout means he's out?

Some physical umpiring in the Japanese league

Yeah, I thought the board would enjoy a tv show dedicated to umpire bloopers haha -
Some physical umpiring in the Japanese league
Concernedcitizen2 replied to CentralOhioUmp30's topic in Professional
Just wanted to say this isn't the Japanese league, this is a Taiwanese league. This type of behavior used to be considered somewhat acceptable in the Japan league but after Mike Dimuro resigned it got cleaned up a lot. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_DiMuro#Japanese_baseball You can see in this first clip how aggression against umpires used to be acceptable. The umpire says in the newspaper the next day "Nobody saw the play closer than I did, therefore I made the call with the utmost self-confidence." -
Different kind of fan interference?
Concernedcitizen2 replied to Concernedcitizen2's topic in Professional
Now that I think of it, this actually reminds me of something that I believe happened in the 2002 World Series at Anaheim Stadium there was a ball hit to the wall, Giants outfielder goes to pick it up, as he's bending over, a fan starts beating him on the back with one of the "boomsticks" they have to make noise (the ones that are inflatable thick drum sticks that you hit together), the announcers on TV caught it, but the umpires made no call.
