Yes. That’s a textbook situation for getting help. And as for the “ask first” mechanic: 2008 was several lifetimes ago in umpiring and guest instructors don’t even necessarily teach their own material. It’s not a good mechanic in 2021.

Protest: Uncaught Third Strike; umpire killed play

I would argue the proper take-away from that MLB interp would be that interference is usually an out, not an uncaught third strike. -
Protest: Uncaught Third Strike; umpire killed play

Prior explanations of the voluntary strike mechanic are correct, but I would emphasize that calling time is NEVER part of the mechanic and, in large part, caused this whole mess. Disclaimer, I’m not familiar with FED rules and this is one messed up scenario, so correct me if I’m off base here. To narrowly address the defensive team’s appeal, they’re wrong—on a dropped third strike the batter’s “window” doesn’t “expire” until he (1) enters the dugout or (2) he doesn’t try to reach 1st before all infielders leave the field when the inning is over. See 8-4-1-i. To address it more broadly, no matter how I look at this, it comes back to the rectify a situation due to umpire error rule. Was returning the batter to bat with an 0-3 count an appropriate outcome here? I say no. It directly conflicts with too many other rules. IMO, they could have either (1) placed the batter on 1st or (2) declared him out—whichever was more likely. To go with #2, the presumptive out would have needed to be very obvious. Now, what ends up happening regarding the subsequent passed balls and runs being scored... who the heck knows... Whether it’s denying the protest on the narrow grounds of 8-4-1-i or opening the can of worms that the broad analysis would require, the protest probably ends up denied either way. -
...how does this end with only one ejection?

I like the no-call—not saying interference would be incorrect, but from the video it looks like the dirtier end of the stick. Only recommendation I’d have would be to stay on the line and not drift with the C there for the catch/no catch.

I went to the new school this year, they are ok with buckets (a traditional mask would have been a LOT easier though). 15% discount from school.

Guys, thanks a bunch for the advice. I just ended up pulling the trigger on the Wilson Ti, the more I think about it, it may supplant my bucket (I think I'm a bit too skinny to pull off the bucket look, and the it's a pain in the a#$ to haul around on the road). Also, $135 from ump-attire was a bit too good to pass up. Thanks again.

Ok, I'm a happy HSM user, but I am looking around for a traditional style mask to outfit with Team Wendys, to serve as a backup. I will hopefully be working Pro ball this summer, so I realize I should probably just go with the Wilson Ti, but I was wondering if there were any other alternatives. I know I am crazy for asking but would a Easton speed elite frame be anywhere near serviceable? I had to ask, it would be a good looking mask. Anyways, thanks.
