D3K. Ball goes to the backstop out side of the 1B line.

The throw brings F3 across the bag into fair territory where B1 is running out side of the running lane.

Ball, F3, and B1 all arrive at the same spot at around the same time.

I got interference.

What say you?

Just a bad throw.

The runner's allowed out of the lane at the base to touch the base.

even in HS ball this is not interference. Say 5 Hail Lenny's and promise not to make the same mistake again.

What if the contact occured earlier a few steps from the bag ? The throw is coming from foul territory and the runner is in fair ground out of the lane. The throw is poor and would pull F3 but hits the runner first.

In OBR, the runner has to interfere with the one receiving it. If it is a poor throw, then he has not interfered with F3's opportunity to field the throw. We cannot assume he would have caught it if he has to come off the base to catch it. I would not call INT if F3 has to leave the base to catch the ball.

In FED, I don't think it matters. But, that is just a recollection of a discussion about it earlier this year on another site. I think it comes down to if he interferes with the throw at all while out of the lane. I don't think they take the quality of it into account. But, don't take that for certain.

In FED, the quality of the throw is not taken into account.

In this instance where the catcher is in foul territory and the runner is in fair territory or vice versa the quality of the throw is taken into account and the play is not interference.

The difference is when both are in foul or fair and the catcher lobs the ball over the head of the runner and over the head of the first baseman. That play is ruled differently in HS and in pro.

In OBR you are judging interference on the F3's ability to catch it so the quality does matter. In Fed you are judging the catcher's ability to throw it so quality doesn't matter.
