Batter swings at the pitch and misses but the ball hits his leg. The ball goes flying and a run comes home from third. Should the run count? Should it have been a dead ball?

thanks. Btw. 14u teams

The easiest way to remember this - any pitch that hits the batter is always an immediate dead ball. Always...no exceptions...no excuses...do not pass go...do not collect $200.  It doesn't matter if:

  • pitch hits the batter out of the strike zone
  • pitch hits the batter in the strike zone
  • batter leans into the pitch to get hit on purpose
  • batter swings
  • pitch bounces before it hits the batter
  • batter fouls off the pitch into his foot (technically not a pitch anymore, but you get the idea)

On that final note, any batted ball that hits the batter (batter-runner), in the box, out of the box, fair, or foul, is also an immediate dead ball.
