Runner hit by batted ball

Situation is runners on first and second with nobody out. Runner advancing to second is struck by batted ball so ball is dead and the runner is out. Batter is awarded first base but what about the runner on second? Had a game today and they made the runner return to second. I disagreed but was overruled by tournament director.

On that type of interference, the runner is out, the BR is awarded 1B, and all other runners return to their time of pitch base. By rule, the umpires were correct.

Are you asking as a coach, or as an umpire?

The TD knows the rule – When a Runner is guilty of Interference (INT) of this nature, no other Runners may advance or score except if forced to advance by the Batter-Runner (BR) being placed on (awarded) first base. 

If you're asking as a coach, eh, you should know this, but coaches have not known simpler things... 

If you're asking as an umpire, you need to know this.

Jason, you already knew some important elements of the rule—the ball is dead, the runner is out and the batter is awarded first base. I would say that’s a good start. Here’s the actual applicable rule telling us what happens to any runners after a baserunner is hit by a fair batted ball (I have highlighted with bold italics the one part you didn’t know) (you did not mention which rule set so I used OBR)--

OBR 5.09(b) Retiring a Runner

Any runner is out when:

(7) He is touched by a fair ball in fair territory before the ball has gone through, or by, an infielder and no other infielder has a chance to make a play on the ball. The ball is dead and no runner may score, nor runners advance, except runners forced to advance. EXCEPTION: If a runner is touching his base when touched by an Infield Fly, he is not out, although the batter is out;…
