Hot shot to 1B, force play made by touching 1B with glove in ball and it's a wacker...offensive coach wants me to go for help

Two-man, nobody on. I am in A. Hot shot grounder, fair to 1B...1B-man makes a diving play to his right and then dives back to his left for 1B tagging the base with the ball securely in his glove a half-step before the runner touches the bag. I grab an out.

At-bat coach asks for time, we grant time and he asks me if I will go to my partner on that and I said, "Coach, I will go to my partner if asked on a swipe tag, pulled foot or running lane violation but, not on this." He accepted the call and we ended the game without further incident.

After the game, my partner said he didn't have anything different on the call but suggested saying to the coach next time, "Coach, that's judgement and I am right on top of that play..." instead of citing the specific examples of when we "can" go to a partner. This seems confusing...swipe tags, pulled feet and or running lane violations are ALSO judgement and we go to partners on those.

What do you have here, brothers?

I go with a simple, "I had the play the whole way." I'm not going to tell them that it's judgment (for the reasons you mentioned) and I'm not going to tell them when I might (because I might see all I need to on a swipe tag or pulled foot as well.

Also, you'd never go for help on RLI as it's PU's call. I've gotten it if they haven't, but if I don't have it and they don't either, it didn't happen.

I usually reply something to the effect of, "that's my call all the way."

If he brings you information such as a pulled foot, swipe tag, or dropped ball, then it's up to you if you want to ask for additional information from your partner.

If he wants me to go to my partner on a straight judgement to shop a call, depending on the level, I'll tell him we don't do that, and he should know better, or something to that effect. I don't recommend it, but then again, I just don't give a SH*# anymore. I don't have any tolerance for adults acting like 5 year olds on a baseball field.

All you've done is given him a script of exactly what he needs to say next time if he hopes you'll go to your partner.

"Coach, I saw everything I need to see"

Coaches that argue/question/shop calls on anything under half a step need to be kept on a very short leash, and not encouraged to continue with such shopping.  You give them an inch they'll take a mile.   Not only are you going to turn the game into a SH*#how, you are going to piss off the opposing coach for being so spineless.
