Umpire-Empire locks topics which have not been active in the last year. The thread you are viewing hasn't been active in 2001 days so you will not be able to post. We do recommend you starting a new topic to find out what's new in the world of umpiring.

Have any of you had a rule set that made an IFF an immediate dead ball?  Had an IFF tonight and a spectator insisted that runners weren't allowed to advance on a dropped IFF.  Game was 8th grade played under NFHS.  Thinking younger rule sets might do this but never heard of it.  Thanks

Announcers butcher rules often; fans way more so.

Sounds like you knew the rule, but a fan spewing about a rule is white noise as an umpire.

I worked a game with a 20-year veteran of NCAA baseball umpiring, he was on the dish.

Based loaded (forget how many outs but is irrelevant here)

Kid hits dribbler , catcher fields and throws to first, ball skitters away, not far. R2 is coming home trying to score on skitter ball, ball thrown to home.

catcher caught it and played it like you would if first throw was to plate, foot on plate, no tag. Partner says safe.

one mom in the stands was as loud as I’ve ever heard someone, screaming about how his foot was touching the plate, she has video proof, telling everyone within a mile radius her kid got the guy out.

I never found out if anyone informed her it wasn’t a force out since it was R2 coming home and not R3, but I do know my partner never informed her, or acknowledged her.

He had the rule right, he knew it, so a woman carrying on incorrectly was no skin off his back.

The only difference, if you want to call it such, is the skill level of the players and what you define as 'ordinary' effort. Pee Wee kids? Camped under the ball might be your definition, 15U may be the kid on a jog, tracking the ball while moving. Other than that? The rule is the rule.

I've never even seen a community league make that as an ad hoc rule...I know this person isn't alone in this belief...I to this day am always puzzled why people think an IFF is a dead ball...there's is nothing anywhere that ever states, acknowledges or reinforces that belief...but somehow people still come to believe it.

At the younger ages...U10...even U12, it's common to see no IFF rule at all...simply because the possibility of them pulling off a double play is so remote...let alone being savvy enough to even think about it, so they wouldn't learn that false belief there either.
