Crossed Up

14U.  Pitcher has a good mix of pitches and is doing a great job of keeping the other team off balance.  Do you all ever find yourself in a position where you are expecting a fast ball and get a breaking pitch and get crossed up?  I try not to guess but on occasion I find that a breaking pitch will catch me off guard and I'll ball it.

I don't assume, but, in the mid-innings of a showcase game, the pitcher threw a knuckleball. Even though it floated in slowly, it still disoriented me for a moment. I remember thinking, "What the hell is that? It's not rotating!" After calling the pitch, I said to the catcher, "You gotta warn me he's got that pitch!"

I ask the catcher during first inning warm-ups 'what's the pitcher got' and 'whats his strikeout pitch' and 'anything else'.

 

also we used to do the old, while in b or c position, ploy of the bu putting hands on hips for a curve ball - it was always funny to see the bu and runner on second in the same stance

No, it doesn't catch me off guard... but it sure catches the catcher off guard, breaks way too early, bounces at 59.5 ft... and balls me.

I swear, I should wear a church bell instead of a Nutty Buddy... at least then we'd hear a resounding CLANG! or BONG! when I get hit and the participants are mystified as to why/how that dirt devil wasn't caught or blocked by F2. There are times I want to (but have resisted, of course) start grabbing spare baseballs, a batting doughnut, my plate brush... anything handy ... and start throwing it at F1, who is usually some delusional fourteen or thirteen year old who has been lied to told he can experiment with throw a breaking ball without first practicing it... for a year.
