... and these should match. Navy (trim) for navy, black for black.

And (modern) NBA referees are just as concerned about style as baseball umpires. In fact, maybe more so.

I would venture that soccer referees more than the NBA. But that is just because they have as many color and pattern options as we have.

You know, I was going to say that, but soccer is poo-poo'ed here in the US so much that you could validate the argument that their referees wear modern, "loud" styles so as to get any attention they possibly can. Serie A (Italy) has their referees in day-glo yellow Diadora, mostly for the vivid attention it attracts, but also because... they're Italian. I said NBA because do you think the officials are going to want to stay in "high school zebra stripes" while these multi-million dollar athletes trot out their personal, cultured brands on top of new uniforms nearly every game? I think not.

If there's a league or entity even more stuck in the past in relation to the current styles of its participants, you'll find it in softball and lacrosse. Lacrosse, unfortunately, doesn't have the traction to as yet outfit their officials with anything beyond a football referee's stripes and some shorts. But softball... you'd think that with young women running around in a myriad of different styles, cuts and contours of uniforms, in a spectrum of colors that can only be described as assailing the senses (have you been able to look at hot pink, electric violet, or voltage green and not shield your eyes?), the officials would wear something at least in keeping pace with these styles...

... Nope. Powder polo shirt with navy trim, or (worse) red-white-&-blue trim. Thanks for stickin' around 1970's.

My whistle matches my basketball shirts, only because it's black.

Six soccer colors, 6 whistle colors.
