Any advice for a successful competent varsity umpire who would like to move on to the next level-college?

Im just wondering if any of you who do work college would be willing to share your story on how you got the opportunity.

Also any clinic recommendations that can get someone in front of a couple college assigners.

Thanks

All depends on what's your definition of successful and competent.

Go to one of the umpire schools. That gets you a good start. I went, didn't get a MiLB job but had the opportunity to work a summer of independent ball. Got my foot in the door. I now typically work around 40-45 college games (D2, D3, NAIA, JUCO) a spring. That is while living in the midwest too.

Go to a reputable camp with quality instructors. There are a lot of very good camps across the country. Find one that fits into your schedule. Most good camps have instructors from various areas who have connections across the country. If you can work, they'll find you and reach out to the assignor(s) in your area.

Do you have any college umpires on your HS board? If so, talk to them. I was interested in college ball when I started. I got a recommendation from a local guy.

That got me a foot in - I then had the tryout and made it in. I have attended NCAA clinics to advance once there. Many conferences still use the 2-man system, so don't just look for 3 & 4-man camps, get a good 2-man one as well.

Just remember, once doing games - keep working hard and keep learning, you can only get more games.

Anne Arundel - that is in Maryland?   If you are in the Northeast or Mid-Atlantic, then check out CBUAO.com. There is information there.
