Had plate Sunday adult league and they brought in right hand sidearm pitcher. I had the plate and when I do I try to pick up the ball from the pitchers hand at his release point. With right hand batter I could not pick it up and while felt my calls where good was wondering if anyone had tip how to pick up ball from release point.

I assume the RHB is obstructing your view. If that is the case, you may have to adjust. Sometimes, I adjust up, sometimes down, sometimes back, sometimes I lean to the right and peak, then get back to my spot. I can't tell you what will work for you all the time, sometimes, you just have to fight for some place to see.

Sometimes, no matter what, you're not going to see the release point; batter crowding the plate, pitcher with a funny delivery, catcher setting up inside...

When this happens to me, I just concentrate on the closest point I can see it and follow it in from there.

I've had a sidearmer and a submariner this year.  Do your level headed best to pick up the ball as soon as you can if screened by the batter on a wide release.

Did you watch him warm up? You may be able to catch his release point and speed. In general, if know where the release point is, and can guesstimate the speed, you may know (roughly) the flight of the ball. Then, when it reaches the plate area, you won't be completely surprised.

I always watch from behind the plate both sides starting pitchers, and any replacement. In this case with RHB  I was able to pick up the pitch 1/4away from the mound so I was ok there. First time in 7 years I came across a true sidearm pitcher where every pitch was side arm .
