Coach's Behavior Poll

On the HS or college level during school season, I have not ejected a coach for a while. In some places I work, I think coaches behavior has improved, in other places it has deteriorated.  I am curious about this board's perception of coaches in the area the members work in.

If it is worse do you have suggestions to improve it by rule change or other option?

I may post the reason for this if there is interest in the poll.

Coaches' behavior has a direct impact on that of their players and fans.  Coach/official history also has an influence. 

Pocketbook penalties work great for the bad ones.

In our area the coach behavior has gotten better across all sports.  High school athletic directors and administrators do not like it when the main event at a baseball or basketball game becomes a coach acting like a moron.    

A couple years ago a high school baseball coach did not have his contract renewed after his team went to the district finals.  This was his school's first trip to a district final since the 1980s.  The program improved during the 2 years he was there, but during the course of the season he had gotten himself ejected during a pre-game meeting, gotten himself ejected arguing a batter interference call and acted like a moron when he wasn't serving his suspension time for being ejected.

High School coach behavior has improved a lot. Travel or youth ball, not so much.

High school and college coaches have a lot more riding on the job. College coaches - it is usually their only job and year round. The NCAA has added some penalties to address some of the problem coaches, and it is now much better.

In some cases, it has to do with the respect that the coaches are giving the umpires. If the umpire is doing NCAA, then there is a 'belief' that the umpire earned that job, and if he/she lives up to the standards, then the coaches accept them. That also goes back to the HS level, in my area, the HS AD's don't put up with problem coaches. The economy is such,, that some of them have to fight to keep programs, and they won't let the coaches ruin it for the kids. Our HS guys get respect (if they give respect back), partly because the AD's and state will help enforce trouble coaches.

Every league/division that I work seem to have some sort of 'rule' that can be enforced on problem coaches. You folks that do travel ball (we don't have it) seem to get the most grief, because the coaches have no training, they are re-living their dreams through their kids and the TD's just want money.

Consider also the effect of this thing called "social media".

if you pull shenanigans or erupt in a tirade or act in a manner unbecoming, you have likely been captured on someone's InstaTwitBookTube. It's very difficult – nigh impossible – to make that sort of blemish go away.

In my experience....the behavior of the coaches who get paid to coach and fired if they lose has gotten better......youth coaches not so much.......

I think Coaches' behavior goes hand-in-hand with the officiating association. When I worked for 2 different HS associations the difference was night and day. 

If the association does not set the tone the coaches will take every inch they can and more. When the association has a firm direction, leadership and takes control of the situation, the coaches learn the boundaries.

Same situation two different associations. Coach bumps umpire (very intentionally)umpire had already been ej'd in both situations.

1. Report made (at that time they did not go straight to the state) Coach suspended 1 game. Nothing further happened until much later when the state found out through a video. Then the state stepped in and added 3 games to his suspension. Had no video been around nothing would have happened.
2. Report made assigner contacted the state 2 games added immediately.
