Good Grief--Illegal Glove (Pitcher)

In Texas, the HS season is at the half-way point for district...about 2 weeks left.  I have a game last night and the starting pitcher for the visiting team takes the field in the bottom of the 1st with a black glove with all kinds of grey trim and leather on it.  Before he throws his first warm-up pitch, I tell him to go get a new glove.  He tells me that he's used it all year long!  SMH!  Of course, the coach wants to tell me that I'm the only umpire in a 100 mile radius that has said anything all year long.  Amazing!

He's probably been told every time he's tried to use the glove that he can't use it.  His canned response is that "he's used it all year long without anyone saying anything" to him.  My reply would be, "That's okay. Today, he needs to get a different glove."

Not baseball but had this happen in a football game when we corrected something the team was doing wrong.  Coach said first crew all year that said something.  Little did he know was that the crew from the week before warned us about it with him.  He kind of walked away quickly when I told him that.

To me it just further shows how most coaches don't know the rules of the game.  If that kid has indeed pitched all year with that glove, not only is it insane that no other ump has corrected it, it is equally amazing that no opposing coach has demanded that it be removed.  Had I not handled it, I doubt very seriously that the opposing coach would have ever said something.  Oh Well!

It might not have been distracting so if they knew the rule they were just waiting to use it to discombobulate the pitcher and no opportunity arose. If they did not know the rule they probably would complain anyway if it was distracting. College allows grey or white piping.
