Missed sign...

H.S. rec ball.  R1 and I'm in B  

 

Pitcher is throwing pretty hard but with not to much control.  The teams are a mishmash of decent players and guys just having a good time while off from their regular sports.

 

Here comes the pitch and it's right down the middle and the catcher jumps to the side for the pitch out.  Well either the pitcher missed the sign or the catcher gave him the wrong sign... never the less it was right down the middle with no catcher to stop it.  Fortunately for our Plate ump it was knee high and went right between his legs. Plate ump calls "ball"

 

Pitcher turns and says to me "That was right down the middle, wasn't that a strike?" (kind of smiling, with no ill will)

 

I said when that happens (missed sign on a pitch out) that it's an automatic ball.

 

"Oh... OK. " he replies and on we go.

The ball went through his legs. Assuming he was properly in the slot, are you in the middle of the plate? I would think first the pitch was already a ball. Just a thought.

Geez guys.. it's a humorous story. (at least it was funny to me)  It was over for a strike.  Was the plate ump not in the perfect / MLB / school taught slot?  Probably not.  Let's NOT analyze his positioning.  It went through his legs, over for a strike... etc.  This wasn't posted in the mechanics section.

This exact thing happened to me 7-8 years ago,
