I had posted previously about being assigned my first District LL Tournament game in my first year as an umpire... that opportunity came and went as the game was re-scheduled and I was unavailable.

However, I've since called two District LL Tournament games, 1 base, 1 plate (last night, winners bracket final), both with the district UIC, and I am in awe of the difference in baseball. I love umping, period... but it is a ton more fun when the baseball is better. I have never been more comfortable behind the plate than I was last night.

Thanks to all for helping to prepare me for this. Havin' a blast!

Nice,

I have my first LL District 12U game tonight, but need some advice on how to handle a 'fellow' brother in blue.  Long story short, he turns people and coaches off by his arrogance.  He is rude and in the past has worn shorts while calling tournament games.  What can be done if he comes off like this tonight.  I plan to keep my mouth shut and only talk if I am asked to.

If he shows up in shorts, I'd ask him to change. If he refuses, call the UIC immediately. Regarding his demeanor, you're both there for the same reason, maintain the integrity of the game. When his, or anyone else's behavior jeopardizes the integrity of the game, it must be brought to his attention. I know for a fact that many 'arrogant' people don't realize they're arrogant, so you may be helping him by letting him know he's bringing reproach upon himself and his association. This doesn't mean return evil with evil, but rather do it in a careful, friendly way.

He's going to do what he wants anyway.  If the people who assign are aware of this, then they are condoning the behavior.  If they are not aware, then make them aware and let them handle it.  You are not responsible for the deportment nor fashion-sense of your partner.  If you work for a tightly run organization, then they will take care of it.  If you work for an organization that is getting warm bodies on the field, it's time to move on.

@LMSANS - I'm with ya, I just have a hard time going behind a guy's back without telling him first myself.

Game went pretty well 12-2 in 3 1/2 innings.  He did not show up in shorts, but he started his usual antics.  During the pregame, he refused to do the plate even though he was assigned it.  I told him he was lucky I had it in the trunk and going forward when you are assigned the plate, come prepared. Got to home plate area and he was pretty quite and agreed to my pre-game speech.  Had to cover 3B a few times due to him being slow coming out of 'A' position on a double. Wasn't about to let him give me a missed coverage.  After game he went directly to the food stand to get his free hotdog and drink without waiting for me to exit the field after the teams shook hands.  The tournament game assignor was at the game and was out in the outfield bleachers watching the game and called me aside to say that I did a good job and that he took notes to pass onto the district office.  He has seen enough and wanted to witness him in action.  He also mentioned that I will be getting a few more district and section assignment in the coming weeks.

Good stuff Pal. Glad it went well for ya. Way to leave yourself blameless.

Congrats - sounds like you were on your game and confident out there. Just curious, why are you waiting for the teams to shake hands to exit the field?
