Working a JV summer game this afternoon working solo.  First inning, R1.  Pitcher throws over and the ball gets away.  R1 breaks for second.  I make sure the ball will stay in play and haul ass to the right side of the mound on the way to the working area.  R1 rounds second and heads to third.  I'm chest to ball and decide I need to stay ahead of him for a possible play at third.  Then, out of nowhere, I'm hit by a sniper!  There was a small patch of grass behind the mound that was wet, and I went down like I was hit with a Barrett 50 cal.  I snap to my feet, pick up the ball again and turn to third for the call.  Runner easily beats the throw.

Now, I guess every cloud has its silver lining.  As I am heading back to the plate, F2 asks if I am okay.  I say yes, just a little embarrassed.  The fans heard me say this and a couple of them give me the best compliment an umpire can hear (IMO).  "No need to be embarrassed, blue.  Great job hustling and getting out behind the mound.  So many umpires never get out from behind the plate."  After the game, I am at my car changing and a parent asks if the fall hurt, and echos the comments made by the other fan about my hustle.

I didn't even notice my pants until about the 4th inning:

Really? On one of my games????

Yup - I'll send you the dry cleaning bill. ;)

Couple of other tidbits:

1st HALF inning took over 20 minutes.

The sprinklers came on in the 6th inning

Batter squares to bunt, pitch is coming right at him. He braces for the impact, without pulling his bat back, and gets hit in the helmet. I send him to first. DC (home team) says he's never heard the rule that a batter doesn't have to pull the bat back.

 I'm hit by a sniper!

I went down like I was hit with a Barrett 50 cal.

I snap to my feet, pick up the ball again and turn to third for the call.

:D I always find this terminology incredibly insulting. No one I ever shot EVER got up again.

I never said it was a US military trained sniper.  :)
