Question

We end our Major game last night 2-2 after 9 innings.  We are continuing the game on Thursday as part of a double header.  Fininshing the first game and starting the next game right after.

Here are my questions.

1)  The pitchers that finished the 9th inning are able to pitch the 10th as long as they meet the proper resting period? Therefore if by pitcher only pitched 20 pitches he is eligble to start the 10th inning?

2)  If he had pitched more than 35 and less than 50 he would not be eligible?

3) Lastly any pitcher that was not eligible on Tuesday because of pitch count from a prior game can be eligible to pitch in the continuation game as long as he meets the proper pitch count guidelines?

Thanks for your help,

Nick

Hey Nick. I do a league with a pitch count also. However, as an umpire that is not my responsibility to be worrying about how many pitches this pitcher or that pitcher pitch. Those Responsibilties fall on the teams. If I was just you just worry about umpiring the gam.

I presume that you are referring to Little League Majors.

Pitching limitations are covered in Rule VI - PITCHERS which begins on page 40 of the 2014 LL Rule book.

Rule VI - PITCHERS, Note 3 covers pitching in a resumed game.

NOTE 3: In a suspended games resumed on another day, the pitchers of record at the time the game was halted may continue to pitch to the extent of their eligibility for that day, provided said pitcher has observed the required days of rest.

Example 1: A league-age 12 pitcher delivers 70 pitches in a game on Monday when the game is suspended.  The game resumes on the following Thursday.  The pitcher is not eligible to pitch in the resumption of the game because he/she has not observed the required days of rest.

Example 2: A league-age 12 pitcher delivers 70 pitches in a game on Monday when the game is suspended.  The game resumes on the following Saturday.  The pitcher is eligible to pitch up to 85 more pitches in the resumption of the game because he/she has observed the required days of rest.

Example 3: A league-age 12 pitcher delivers 70 pitches in a game on Monday when the game is suspended.  The game resumes two weeks later.  The pitcher is eligible to pitch up to 85 more pitches in the resumption of the game provided he/she is eligible based on his/her pitching record during the previous four days.

As @mjr_2013 pointed out above, re-entry rules apply so, in Major's division, any pitcher who was removed from the game prior to its suspension are not eligible to re-enter as pitcher.

If the pitcher meets the rest requirement, then he is able to pitch the next inning.  If he pitches in the suspended game, he can not pitch in the next game  (page  41 LL 2014 Rule Book, k.)

I would be more concerned with my game fee than pitch counts. Make sure you get paid for the original game, the continuation, and the new game.

Good point about the double-header.  I failed to include paragraph (k).

Rule VI - PITCHERS

(k) Pitching in more than one game in a day:

Minor League, Little League and Intermediate (50-70) Division -- A player may not pitch in more than one game in a day.

In this rule they use the term "Little League" to refer to the LL Major's Division.  LL Juniors Division and above can pitch in more than one game in a day with some restrictions.
