So, a tournament rule set says SPORTING NEWS RULES will apply.  Does that mean OBR or something else?

(Also includes the following:  "Pitchers who fake a throw to third base and then throw to another base will be charged with a balk. A pitcher that steps toward first or third must throw to that base. You can still step towards second and not make a throw to that base."  *sigh*  Gonna see balks called when a pitcher steps off and fakes to third before throwing to first?)

Both statements are written with the understanding that the coaches will never crack a book.

Once upon a time, the Sporting News published the OBR.  I am not sure that is still the case, though.

But, yes, I am 99% sure any tourney that says Sporting News is referring to the OBR.

Why? When a pitcher steps off, he is no longer a pitcher. That means none of the fielders would be able to fake to 3B either?

Funny how it refers to "Sporting News Rules" then has a link to the MLB rules where there is *no* mention of the Sporting News whatsoever.  Even the current hardcopy book is not published by Sporting News.  Maybe the last time one of these guys looked in the rule book was when it was published by Sporting News.

If they want to go with historical references, they should say "Cartwright Rules" and give the MLB link, since OBR evolved from the Alexander Cartwright's original 1846 rules.  Or, for more confusion, they could cite the "Knickerbocker Rules"!

You know that, I know that, but . . . poorly drafted (and unnecessary) local rules drive me batty -- if the point is to make sure everyone knows this rule is being applied, why wouldn't it say something simple like "Coaches should be aware that the recent modfiication to rule ___ (prohibiting feints to third base from the rubber) will be applied in this tournament.  The first sentence is not only unnecessary (covering nothing that is not covered in the second), but seems to suggest support for the myth that the balk is caused by the throw to first rather than the feint to third.

thx to all

Completely agree. That's social norms dictating what needs to be addressed. So many people used the "31" move as a deception that people started sayin that the "31" move was no longer allowed, it caught steam, and those same people began to believe the rule was changed solely for that, rather than "no feint to 3B."

It's easy now people. Don't fake to 3B, unless you're in NCAA or FED, then you can. But OBR cannot, and some other associations may adopt it. But in my backyard I can. Did official wiffle ball adopt it? My head hurts.

Hadn't heard the term "Sporting News" in a long time.

Back from 1980 to 1983 I subscribed to their Newspaper like magazine.
