Top of the 7th, HT up, VT has bases loaded and 2 outs, down by 2.   The winner gets home field for first round of state playoffs, so IT MATTERED.

Uncaught 3rd strike swinging..........I immediately come out to the right (b/c the pitch was to my left and inside on the RH batter) giving the safe signal with a verbal "NO CATCH, NO CATCH".

And then all hell breaks loose.   :wow:

The catcher did not field the ball cleanly (and it took a good second for him to gain control), the BR runs to 1B, but the catcher comes out "over" the plate area and doesn't throw anywhere.  He turns around to me and immediately informs me that he touched the plate for the 3rd out.   I maintain my composure as best I could and wait for everything to settle......runners running wherever they're going and such, coaches and crowd going APE SH!T.

I didn't see him touch the plate, b/c I wasn't expecting that....I was expecting the throw down to first.   In fact, I never even THOUGHT of the option of touching the plate.   Shame on me, I know, but that situation is a first for me.     Lesson learned.

I called TIME when the action ceased, went out to my partner, who confirmed that the catcher stepped on the plate.   GREAT SAVE DUDE!!!

Situational awareness is mildly important.   :smachhead:

My routine is when a batter comes to the plate to go over what all the possible plays could happen.

It all ended well and I bet it won't happen again!

This is a good plan.

I only have time to ask three questions: what are my fair/foul responsibilities? what are my outfield responsibilities? what rotation do we have on a clean hit to the outfield and no umpire goes out?

That's it; I'm too slow to be able to think of anything else before the first pitch to a new batter.
