Why are coaches even challenging this anymore?

you must admit this is different than what's been seen before

It is but I think it has been made more than clear they need to have secure possession in the throwing hand for it to be an out.

totally agree!

that being said though ..... THIS SCENARIO could cause issues w/ the new interpretation because it doesn't take into account what happened in this play.  F9 had this for 5 or 6 steps, clearly AND securely

This stinks!  That is a catch.  What if a OF makes a 3rd out catch like this, runs halfway to the dugout and drops it on the transfer to throw it to the umpire after the inning has technically ended?  There has to be a time frame in this definition.

They talked about this EXACT thing on this play on MLBTonight last night (MLB Network)

Yes for a few steps then ran into the wall, therefore making his interaction with the wall part of the catch process then dropped it on the transfer. He ran for a few steps, but never completed the process of the catch. If he ran for a few steps and just dropped it, it still would be not a catch. The steps don't matter, it's the act of getting the ball to the throwing hand and making a clean exchange.

I think we're hearing about this b/c of replay.

The momentum of the catch is not different in this year's rule.

Now, in the post above talking about an outfielder after catching the third out of the 1/2 inning and running into the infield and the ball comes out.

That is still going to be a catch.  The momentum of the catch has been completed.
