They just said that the replay was umpire initiated to see if the catcher blocked the plate w/o the ball.

 

That explains a little more of it then.  I had it muted as I saw them go for the challenge.

It was a 7.13 review—call it a Joe Maddon approach. Rule 7.13 provides a loophole for a manager to essentially challenge any play at the plate under the auspices that the opposition violated Rule 7.13. Because Rule 7.13 Replay Reviews must be initiated by the Crew Chief and cannot be challenged by the Manager, even if the team "loses" the Replay Review, it still retains its Manager's Challenge for later use.
