I am taking my Fed test.

 

One of the questions says, "The pitcher places his pivot foot on the pitching plate with the toe of the pivot foot in front of a line through the front edge of the plate and the toe of his pivot foot behind the back edge."

 

Now, I have read this line four times, and I still can't...quite...visualize it.

 

The question is about whether this is a legal pitching position.  I think it's a trick question!  I think the correct answer is I should call Time immediately because continued play may further injure the pitcher.  But, that answer is not one of the choices.

Typo. Should say heel. Check out situation #5 on the NFHS site's 2014 rules interps. 

 

SITUATION 5: The pitcher places his pivot foot on the pitching plate with the toe of the pivot foot in front of a line through the front edge of the plate and the heel of his pivot foot behind the back edge. His non-pivot foot is in front of the line extending through the front edge of the pitching plate. The pitcher attempted to pick-off the runner at second base. RULING: This is an illegal pitching position. When the pitcher moved in his pick-off attempt, he made an illegal pitch and a balk would be enforced. (6-1-2 Penalty)

I got a 98 on the test, and that is the one I missed.  I had no idea what it was asking.

Yeah, in the end I decided it was describing a legal position, but the description was bungled.  And, I did read it over and over to see if I was missing something!

 

I chose "legal" but you could not tell that from the wording.  You have to "read between the lines."

 

Who knows, though.  I haven't submitted my answers yet, and I may be wrong about what it was asking.

I was interpreting the question correctly ---- it's an injury question!
