Saw it on MLB Network. Believe me, that wasn't the end of it,and Woods had some very choice words for Buckner when he was taken out of the game. Let's just say they weren't very pleasant.

Would there not have been 3 outs on the sacrifice fly if this had not happened?? Or is this a misprint.

 

The inning began when Anthony Rendon singled and Washington pitcher Ross Ohlendorf bunted him to second (1 out). Span then hit a bouncer to first that Freddie Freeman bobbled for an error, putting runners on first and third (should have been (2 outs). Now with 2 outs, Zimmerman walks and Werth walks on a close pitch to load the bases. Then a fly out (3 outs). Am I missing something.

Are asking if he calls that strike three wouldn't have they been out of the inning? Is so then yes, but if there is no error at first you get the same result. I have been reading the comments on Gil's site and of course they are vilifying the call. C.B. is the most inconsistent ball/strike umpire, they say. If you look at the graph, which everyone wants to reference, he had a good game. The pitch was in the statistical borderline so whichever way he called it the computer would say he was right. Then the catcher pulls the pitch, ball.

If you are asking me--yes, if there was no error at first, no runs would have scored, end of problem, since the Werth at bat was with the bases loaded (due to the error) and a run scored on the walk. Just clarifying as I believe we are on the same page.

 

And for other clarity concerning Woods pitches and how they were officiated for better or for worse. Just remember, if every one of us had pitch fx set up for our games, there would be the same type of anomalies both great and pitiful, if that is how one would want to describe the situation for all of us. Some would be getting great games and be the greatest thing since sliced bread. Some would be getting great games and pitch fx would be telling the same story as it does for those who think an umpires grades poorly for a game. That's how it is for all of us. It has to be statistically speaking.

 

Here is the graph for Woods pitches. Clearly 4 pitches touching the line that were called balls. One touching the line was called a strike and one was definitely outside that was called a strike. A number #3 pitch, but a #3 pitch is rarely a called third strike pitch.

The #3 pitch outside the zone called a strike in Woods favor was a 2nd strike to the first batter LaRoche in the 2nd inning in a 9 pitch at bat. The number #7 pitch barely touching the line and called a ball at the top middle of the square was also during this LaRoche at bat.
