Bill Hohn worked Tucson Sidewinders game in 2008 before his return. I don't know when the practice started but it's been in use for at least a few years.

Is this a relatively new occurrence for MLB guys to rehab in AAA before returning. 

 

I never recall seeing this before, but just this year we have seen West, Runge & Wolf doing it.

 

@Gil: Owner - UEFL or @dumbdumb any ideas?

Just guessing, but it doesn't look like it was normal policy prior to the 2000's. Exactly when it started, I would not know, so I defer to UEFL. If I happen to come across any other articles or old box scores where it looks like a rehab assignment was indeed taking place, I will post.

I'm showing then-MLBU Charlie Williams working the May 6, 2001 New Orleans-Omaha AAA game; Williams was coming off knee surgery so I'd say that qualifies as a rehab job. Terry Craft rehabbed with MiLB ball in July 2002.
