I'm sorry you guys are all wrong. I am surprised at all of you for leading him the wrong way.

You should always turn your head when you call a strike or even a ball, so you can hear where the ball is more clearly. Since your ears can't blink you will never lose track of where the ball is going, and if your good ear is pointed out to where F2 catches the ball or where it's hit you will never hear a manager or coach complain about your zone. If you do hear him you know you need to eject him.

Remember you must track the ball with your ears.

The schools teach the hammer because it's uniform and they can grade everyone based on their criteria. Once your out of school then your expected to develop your own style.

This is correct (or at least it was) but I might change "expected" to "allowed".

I only said expected because they told me if your still using the "school hammer" when you get a job the managers will get on you because you'll look inexperienced.

Damn, umpires working AA and up are very "inexperienced" for using the hammer. Even those damn MLB guys using a hammer are so "inexperienced".

At umpire school you are required to use the hammer.  You are also required to use the hammer until you are promoted to a full season league.  This allows an umpire in his first two years to focus on several fundamentals including plate stance,  head height, timing, tracking, torso lean, distance from the catcher and most importantly judgement without worrying how his strike call "looks".

Hope this helps.
