Yes, Carl does advocate working behind the mound when solo. He also has promoted the idea of working only in B and C, which in some ways makes sense.

Carl sent me a early draft of his "Mechanics for the 21st Centuy" and we discussed the idea of eliminating A position for two man, ad nauseum. I see some valid points to it, but to me, there's no better view of a pickoff at first base than from A position. We all know how to call it from B or C, but in my mind giving up the foul line to the PU, and the sacrifice on the pickoff, doesn't make switching to the new mechanic make sense to me.

Tim.

I've told Carl that working behind the pitcher or the B/C only are both horrible ideas. Carl is great at rules, not so much on mechanics.

What are your guys thoughts about working from behind the mound in a solo game?

My thoughts?  I think I would stop receiving assignments if I tried it.

First responsibility- fair/foul. Good luck calling that from behind the mound...

When you work solo... Absolutely no crap will be taken. 0.0%.

I've seen a few guys working solo from the mound area for the little guys. I'd rather be behind the catcher, but I don't see a problem working 8U from the mound if that's what someone wants to do. Big diamond? Not a chance anything good could come of it......

Working solo blows on a 90. Get the best angle, and definately don't take any guff.

Some of the old fields I worked, I mean 2nd base was a hole, and the kids were fast. On a steal I would do my best, but unless it was obvious I am sure I missed a few. ut

Working solo on a 60 is OK though.  I can cut those angles pretty well!!

When I work solo I am so fast that I beat the throw from F2 to the cut out at 2nd to make the call!

We very rarely work solo in my area. When we do, it's usually because our partner is running late or couldn't make it at the last minute. If I'm told ahead of time that it's a solo game, I'll pass.
