Worked a DH last night.  Worst conditions I've ever umped in, just over 33 degrees and very windy.  Had the bases in first game, could barely stand up because of the wind, starts to rain mid way through the game.  Not a heavy rain, but steady, and with the wind... in your face and lasted all night.  Had the dish for game 2. This game went a full 7, close to 3 hours, went down to the final batter, bases loaded batter grounds out to 1B, HT loses by 1 run.  Had very poor visibility due to the wind driving the rain straight into my face.  Catchers has trouble picking up the pitches.  Field was still ok with all the rain, the plate area started to puddle around the 6th, but still playable.

Losing baseballs all night into the woods, couldn't dry and clean off the balls fast enough.  Home team usually dries off wet baseballs with a towel, in the bottom of the 7th HC tells me his towel is completely soaked, and if the visiting coach wants dry baseballs he can dry them off himself.  I say no he should do it because he is home team.  He does not comply, mumbles something and walks away.  By now, rain is coming harder, everyone is frozen, soaking wet, and I just want to get this game over so I ask the Visiting coach to dry the baseballs, and he's OK with it (but after the game he expressed is unhappiness with the home coach to me)

Home coach is on my case in the bottom of the 7th about my zone, and he may have had an argument on a couple of pitches, but as I say at this point my visibility was terrible.  This from a guy who wanted me to call the game on 3 or 4 occasions during the night.

Anyway, game over, got home drenched and frozen to the core, peeled off my clothes, turned on my electric fireplace and thawed out!  Looking for some sympathy, but the family is all in bed.  At least my dog came to nuzzle beside me!

And who says you can't be romantic about baseball?

Tell him to dry baseballs or give you new ones, his choice. Also, on rainy days, get a container with Turface and roll the ball in it, dries in quickly.

Turface, or drydirt is a game saver. It was 42 here last night and I did a DH also. Was cold in the first one, freezing in the 2nd. The wind was whipping and stealing whatever heat I could produce, and I wasn't dressed for it as it was 82 the day before.

Top of the 5th in the 2nd game, it starts raining, lightly but steady. HT is up, 11-4. VT starts scoring, 11-6, then 11-8. Raining harder and blowing. 11-9, two outs. 11-10 and third out is recorded.

The game is called for weather.  HT wins in 5 regulation innings.  VT coach say, "It's only drizzling." I say, It's 42 degrees, those are 30 MPH winds and it's raining sideways, we are done.  Get these kids home.

Turned out the lights.

I feel your pain Mudder, did two games last night, good conditions, first game hot second one low 60's and slight breeze. Go home and all are a sleep, have a poptart  dinner and my little 10lb buddy wants to me to share. You got to love em! When no one is up they will come to your side!
