Hello, I'm a new (again) umpire.  Called ball back in college but just lower level little league stuff, i"m getting back into it this season and plan on taking it a little more seriously.  I'm in the market for a new CP but wondering if I should go with a 15" or 17" cp?  im between 6ft and 6'1.  Is the only difference the length or do the 17' have broader shoulders?

any input is appreciated

thank you

I has more to do with rib cage coverage then height (even though one does seem to go with the other). Do as the equipment companies recommend and measure your chest. Usually from collar bone to about one inch or so above your belt line. Like Jocko said (can someone say MOM?) I prefer the West Vest Gold which is 13". I feel it gives me more then enough protection.

I'm 6'4" and I use a 15" now. I've tried the 13", but it just didn't feel comfortable, and I've tried the 17", but it seemed a bit much. So I went Goldilocks on the one that felt just right.  I do like the extra couple of inches of protection, though there are many on here that prefer the 13". The shoulder protection/broadness varies by manufacturer.

Best of luck this year!  Don't suck!

Actually, size can depend on manufacture.  I know that Douglas' chest plate gets wider in the 15" model (they dont' make a 17").   I would think 15" is plenty for you.  I would look at the All-Star System 7, or the Douglas 15"

Good call on the S7. I have tried one on and compared it to my WV Gold. They both are listed at 13" but the S7 is definitely longer.

Actually the sys7 is a 12" ....the sides drop to a 13" for lower rib coverage.....but the front is a 12 Sent from my XT907 using Tapatalk 2
