So, R1 and R3, batter hits blooper that lands right behind F6, who grabs it and for some reason, throws to F1. Meanwhile, R1 is still standing on 1st, because his coach thought F6 was going to catch it, and B/R is standing next to the bag, but off the bag. F1 throws to F3, F3 tags R1, who then walks off the bag and to the dugout. B/R steps onto 1st. All in that order. HaHa. As soon as R1 steps into dugout I announce "Runner out!" and everyone looks at me like I am an idiot(including U1), seeing as how the play has finished about 30 seconds ago. How many people have run into this? And have you just called the guy out to make it easy on everyone, or did you do what I did and wait? Would you announce it if F3 tags R1 and then looks at you, or just give a safe sign? Just curious.

Once the tag was applied to R1 he is out due to the force. I would have signaled the out and waited for subsequent action. Once BR steps on first, he is no longer in jeopardy of being put out.

ah... damn.. I am the idiot... totally forgot about the force. Was thinking about the fact that if two BR are standing on bag, the following runner is out when tagged. Duh... thanks!

As another poster said the reason that R1 went to the dugout is because he KNEW he was out on the force. The ball was not caught meaning the batter became a runner and R1 is now forced to go to the next base. As soon as R1 was tagged the BU should have signalled the out. The BR is ok since he is on the base.

The following has me puzzled

As soon as R1 steps into dugout I announce "Runner out!" and everyone looks at me like I am an idiot(including U1),

I assume you are the PU since you referenced U1. What signal if any did U1 give?

In other words from your OP it sounds like U1 did nothing. Was U1 clueless? What did he think happened? Did you talk about the play in post game?

Pete, he already admitted that he thought R1 was safe (he forgot about the force). He was then calling R1 out for, I assume, abandonment.

Pete's wondering why, given there was a U1, that he was steppping on a call.

I had a play Wednesday night that took me by surprise. R1 with no outs. Batter hits a hard bounding ball (one hopper) JUST foul down the first base line. F3 somehow fields the ball and as I am emphatically calling FOUL (I'm the plate umpire), he tags R1 who has a foot on first base. It took me a second to realize that if I had not called the ball foul, F3 made a great play by tagging R1 before stepping on the bag. It would have been a beautiful double play. I had a partner and forgot to ask him about that play in our post game meeting - to see if he was ready to call the out of R1.
