ones the allstar 4000 vs the UA is the same at the Allstar 2500. So I believe thats your price difference. But the UA is the same as the allstar.

These are not the same helmets...the 2500 is an ABS plastic shell w/steel cage....the 4000 is a poly resin shell w/ steel cage...

What does that mean?

The 4000 is rated for speed in excess of 95 mph, the 2500 is not.

Good catch!

Just my $.02 on these helmets...either would probably be fine for the level of baseball any of us work....yes guys in college can produce heat around 95mph...not an everyday thing however. Some weird high schooler can get that much giddy up going as well...but I doubt any of us see that kind of heat on an every game basis...is the 4000 a higher level of protection? Yes, but do you really need THAT much protection? Don't know....but at least All Star is willing to put a rating on these helmets so we can make an informed decision...when I'm in the market for a bucket, I'll look at the All Star FIRST, because they give me the information I need to make the correct decision for the levels that I work.

All of the advice on here sounds correct. Another difference in the 2500 and the 4000 is the type of steel cage. I could be wrong about this, but I know the 4000SL is a what all-star calls their hollow steel cage. I think the cage on the 2500 and the Under Armour above a both solid steel.

If you look at the pictures of the 4000 and 2500 on Ump-attire's site you can see the cage difference. The bars on the 2500 are thinner, but I think the cage weighs more...it is a trade off.

You also have to remember that a pitcher may throw 80-85 but a ball coming off the bat may be much faster.

So it appears that the UA helmet is in fact the All Star 2500 rebranded then they are charging an extra 20 bucks for the logo

Honigs 149.99 UA

All Star 129.99 on Ump -Attire

I could use that 20 bucks for another UA undershirt....

Seems to be the case...IMHO All-Star is a much bigger name in Catchers and Umpire Equipment than UA...but I can see some people wanting the UA logo. I for one will be very happy wearing my All-Star System 7 Helmet without UA logos.

It is kind of crazy...since all people have to do is search and they can find just about anything they want...time for someone to come out with something new for us to talk about.

Understand your point Jax and it is well taken...however I was really trying to get to everyone that All Star is putting information out there that has to this point been unavailable...a speed rating. I commend them for doing so...it will only serve to help us make better decisions with our gear money. I, as many others on here, could use a little help in that area. Too many guys find out the hard way that cheap gear hurts...I don't mean inexpensive...cheap. Cheap can be inexpensive as well as expensive...cost is not the issue. Since I work only HS and below I don't think the 4000 series would be for me....I am using the info that All Star is providing to make an informed purchase decision.....Thanks All Star.

Alright Slo here you go

As previously discussed in thread called the best undershorts available Shock Doctor has some sliding shorts with a pad on the inside of the thigh. Since Ump Attire got them to take the velcro of their hockey tights I propose that umpires every where would be lining up for this item if only it had a cup pocket.

Similar to this that already exists...

McDavid Padded Shorts

I bought them in the ankle length version last year...I think Honig's still carries them. Not sure why only the short version is available on McDavid's site.

McDavid Padded Pants (Honigs)

I like them...and they do have a cup pocket...but they do not fit like a true compression garment. They are almost loose on my lower legs. I wore them on the bases during a game on Friday night and the looseness of the legs kept causing my socks to fall down.

They are great behind the plate though. They were even better when the 50% off coupon code that used to float around here still worked at McDavid's site.

I really do not notice them sticking out to far. They are very low profile. If anything, they could make the padding a little narrower. It is almost too wide for my thighs so it wraps a bit. I would like them better if the did not wrap so far around the inner thigh. It messes with my Nutty Buddy placement. but I like the the added protection when I am behind JV catchers.

JV Catchers are precisely why I am purchasing some padded shorts. Quite frankly I was unaware that human skin could turn those particular shades of purple until getting pelted nine times in an inning and a half last year. I was looking for leggings to avoid the tall socks versus knee brace dillemma :violin:

I took a foul off an inside fastball in a D-I scrimmage Sunday right to my inside thigh. I'm basically purple from my hip to my knee. From there there ares some shades of yellow and green. My wife thinks I deserved it.
