Funny to see it at MLB level. I get 10 of these a year at LL. And the announcer gets the "Broken clock" rule.

That wasn't a good explanation by the announcer. It's the lead runner who is entitled to the base, who happens, in this case, to be the one who was on the base first. Given his explanation, you might think whoever gets there first occupies the base.

First of all, a "layman" can't correctly INFER an actual rule.

Put it this way, how would you explain this to your wife??? See what I mean???

Please don't make this an argument that isn't necessary (and I say this in a kind way)

Remember there could be 2 situations at play and that will determine who is entitled to the base.

1. Where the runner is forced to advance - The lead runner would be out as he has lost his right to occupy the base.
   
2. Where there is not a force play in effect - The trailing runner would be out.
   

Also remember that forces can be removed before the 2 runners are on the same base. There is a video on here somewhere form a while back where the bases were loaded, and R1 was out on a force at 2nd, but R3 didn't go home while R2 went to third. R2 & R3 were both on third and R3 was mistakenly called out. The crew got together and sorted it out correctly, but I suppose U3 has not seen the force at 2nd.

One good mechanic lesson to get out of this video is that U3 points and makes it explicitly clear who is out since both were tagged. This can prevent a whole fustercluck if the wrong person or both players leave the base. While it is a boneheaded play by the players and they should know, in the eyes of the world the umpire screwed something up.

The announcer was trying to say the lead runner(the one already there) is entitled to the base. I think he explained it correctly for the situation that was in front of him. If it had happened backwards he would have had to explain it differently.

Somewhat off topic, this reminds me, I had this same play as BU once, doing a Jr. LL baseball game, except NO tag was made on either runner. F5 just gave the ball back to F1 on the mound, as I'm standing there motionless, waiting for a tag. Out of nowhere my PU calls time and declares the trailing runner out. A WTF moment indeed. It seemed to be common trend with those I use to work with, that they believed the moment two runners are on the same bag, one is immediately out. :shakehead:
