Did you catch the first base umpire's balk call on the Aruba pitcher? It cost them two runs. It would be nice if ESPN could have splurged and set up more than two cameras, but from our angle, it was not a balk.

Right before he started his move to third, there might have been a very slight flinch. Not even sure if U1 could have seen it. But, my question was, is there anything wrong with the move to third as he did it? He stepped directly to the base, but never broke his hands from the set position, almost paused, then wheeled and threw toward first. Probably nothing, but he was so deliberate that it looked odd.

U1 told the coach that F1's free foot went "behind the leg of his pivot foot." It's got to go past the back edge of the rubber, not the leg of the pivot foot.

Also, did anyone catch the attempted hidden ball trick? After FL did a pitching change, F1, F5 and F6 all met at the mound and F1 handed the ball to F5. F1 stood near the rubber as F5 tagged R3 off the base. Oops kids, the ball was not in play and even if F1 toed the rubber and PU said "play" we still have a big, fat nothing as PU cannot legally put the ball in play without F1, in possession of the ball, on the pitcher's plate. Coach for Aruba wanted a balk, but that can't happen without the ball in play. I think the kids baked that one themselves because the coach was mic'd and he didn't say anything about it before he left the mound.

Are you saying if HP isn't aware F1 doesn't have the ball and puts it in play, that's not a balk?

The ball cannot be put back in play if the pitcher doesn't have the ball in his possession. See 5.11.

The one day I don't have my books with me at work. I was thinking the fed rule doesn't mention the ball, only refers to the battery.

5.11 "After the ball is dead, play shall be resumed when the pitcher takes his place on the pitcher’s plate with a new ball or the same ball in his possession and the plate umpire calls “Play.†The plate umpire shall call “Play†as soon as the pitcher takes his place on his plate with the ball in his possession"

Forgot I downloaded OBR to my phone.

So if F1 takes the mound without the rock and HP calls play, it's nothing. Reset and don't do that.

OBR is rather emphatic about the fact that the pitcher must have the ball in his possession as it is mentioned twice in regards to putting the ball in play. I've encountered this play once (very sandlot) and stood to the side of the plate with my mask off looking at the pitcher. When the coach asked me what the hell I was doing, I informed him the pitcher needed the ball before I called play, and since the first baseman isn't the pitcher and not on the rubber despite having the ball, nothing was happening until the pitcher had the ball. Sad part of all this was the he said to me that "well, we did this before and it wassn't a problem"

This rule is the same under all codes and I understand fans and coaches maybe not getting it but its really umpiring 101.
