This is a situation we had last weekend in a district tournament to see who qualifies for state. This is ASA softball so the R1 & R2 are reversed to what is used in baseball, but it is still an interesting situation.

R1 is on 3rd, R2 is on 1st. 2 out. R2 takes off for 2nd. R1 takes off for home when throw to 2nd occurs. Defense makes play on R2 at 2nd. Base umpire calls safe. R1 crosses home plate. Base umpire take 3 steps closer to 2nd and then changes his call to R2 being out on the steal attempt because she did not make it to the base.

Should the run score or not score?

I just want to see everyones opinions here are... the PU asked everyone he saw what there call would be and it was starting to get old.

Umpires need to decide whether the tag was before the runner from third crossed the plate and that determines whether the run scores. It sounds to me like the tag was first even though the call was second.

Agree with all above. Now BOTH umps look bad when HP haas to explain why the run doesn't count. BU got egg all over both of them.

It was all on the same play, no one moved after he made his safe call, ask he moved closer to the play he saw the runner did not get to the base.
