Batter hits the ball in the gap. Stand up double. Ball is thrown to F6 who then tosses it to F1 but overthrows F1. R2 now takes off for third but OC not thinking picks up the ball and tosses it back to F1. I call R2 out on on int.

Is this correct? Never seen it happen before.

If you felt there was any chance of a play on any runner, then the runner is out. Rule 3.15 explains it.

If it was a base coach, then most definitely. If any player was even remotely close to the ball, then probably. However, there must be a possible base. If the runner never leaves the base and shows no attempting, then there is no possible play thus no out.

There has to be intference for interference to be called.

Yes F2 was trying to get to the ball to try to throw to 3rd and there was a chance of a play. It was the HC sitting on a bucket by the dugout.

Thanks

If this is the case you could have a really, a really good chance of INT.. And I think I would have called it as well..the thing you have to judge was, did the defense have a reasonable chance to make a throw to retire a runner?.. if so, call him out..

It is in rule. 11-2-3 it is the Who F*%#ed rule... punish the team who messed up..LOL

F6 threw to F1 and the ball ended up by the dugout? Either a strange field or a truly lousy throw.

Lousy throw way over the pitchers head rolled to the fence by the coach.

Then where was the interference?

the ball is all the way to the fence and you ruled interference. The OC actually did the defense a favor by picking up the loose ball. Depending upon the field, R2 might have been able to score.

There was still a chance of a throw to 3rd for the out.

Let's see who messed up

Ball is thrown to F6 who then tosses it to F1 but overthrows F1.

We have F6 throwing the ball back to F1 and the ball ends up all the way to the back-stop near the OC's dugout.

So who EXACTLY messed up?

You are going to call interference when F6 couldn't even get the ball back to F1?

Amazing!

We have F6 who can't throw the ball back to F1. As Rich said we had a BAAAD throw.

In addition with all due respect your crew allowed the OC to be in LBT sitting on a bucket? It's one thing if the coach is sitting on the bucket in DBT it's quite another when they are in LBT.

I realize this is fall ball and things are more 'lax" then in regular season, BUT since you allowed the coach to "do it" these types of things can occur.

All in all I would NOT rule interference UNLESS R2 took off way late and there was a REAL good chance that F2 had the coach NOT picked up the ball would have had R2 by a good margin.

In a nutshell. this one's on F6. If F6 cannot make a simple toss back to F1 then this team has more porblems on their hands. You "bailed out" F6.

Yes this was exactly the case. If R2 would have been on 3rd base or no chance to get him then I got nothing. But in my judgment there was plenty of time to throw him out.

Yep.

Amazing!

And right.

As stated a time or two before, I absolutely hate the philosophy of "screw the team that screwed up". Just apply and enforce the rules.

Offensive team intentionally interfered with a live ball. Doesn't matter how the ball got there, it is interference. Now throw in a possibility of a play being made on an offensive runner. Out.

Not calling INT will not prevent bad throws in the future. It is probably a good bet that dinging the HC for INT will prevent him from EVER doing it again.

You can only interfere with a play.

If there was a play or the possibility of a play - interference.

If ther was no play - no interference.

No arguement from me on that. HTBT sitch. Sometimes you just have to umpire.

I agree with everything UmpTT said. Also, some leagues have it in their local rules that a coach is allowed to be on the field until he interferes with a play. So, before condemning an umpire crew for something, maybe it would be better to find out why.

And, it is not on F6. It is on OC. Leave the ball alone.

First off I did not condemn the umpiring crew. I merely stated that this type of situation might have been avoided if the coaches stayed in the dugout or IN DBT. Whenever you allow coaches to be in LBT (other then the 1B or 3B coach) you are asking for trouble. Been there done it. FWIW: it was a FED point of emphasis a few years back.

While there might be a local rule that allows a coach to be on the field I do NOT know any local rules that allow a coach (other then the 1B or 3B coach) to be in LBT unless it's Tee ball.

I am NOT letting the coach "off the hook" for picking up a live ball BUT on the same token you have F6 that can't make a simple toss back to F1.

Yes it's a HTBT situation but do not LET the defense "off the hook" when F6 cannot even make a simple toss back to F1. In other words do not be quick to rule interference SIMPLY because the coach picked up a live ball. There are other factors involved.

And, I have been on fields where the bucket is allowed on the field and there is no DBT. Then, if they are allowed on the field and there is no DBT, where are they going to sit? Other than in the dugout where they belong. And, this isn't T-ball but is a rec league. The adage holds true about local rules but they are what they are.

Assuming HC was allowed on the field, the act of him picking up the ball is considered "intentional interference". The play will be immediately dead. Now it is up to the umpire to work and determine if a play was possible. Once that determination has been made, apply the appropriate penalties if any.

Incorrect.

If Intentional Interference is called somebody is out - PERIOD.

You are referring to a concept called "weak interference" however, that wording is contained in authoritative opinion (JR )

Incorrect. When persons authorized to be on the field kick or pick up the ball, it is considered intentional interference. The ball is immediately dead and it is up to the umpire's discretion to place runners or get outs.

Agreed. Rule 3.15
