League ejection rate

Just for fun I ran some numbers for our rec league consisting or the following divisions 9-10, 11-12, 13-14 and 15-18 y/o's, and came up with the following.

Games played 528

Ejections 5 (1 head coach, 1 assistant, 1 player, 1 parent and 1 grandparent)

Overall rate 0.95%

According to Gil's UEFL site the MLB rate is 6.6% thru 621 games

I have 2 ejections (the head coach and player) in 30 rec games or 6.7%. Almost identical as the MLB umpires.

So by my deductions I must be as good as the MLB guys, or slightly better.

I have no point or question, I just thought it was interesting.

First of all, I personally wouldn't count fan ejections in the league totals, that is crowd control issues (unless of course they came onto the field and the umpire had to deal with it there). But like many posts have said in this forum, a rate or number by itself is hard to draw conclusions about. Also, don't compare it to the MLB rate, apples to oranges. I could get into the specifics, but it is possible to run statistics on your group to see if they are significantly higher or lower than neighboring leagues or even over a period of time (sorry, day job decided to butt in).

It would depend on your particular demographic. I've called in areas where the vast majority of coaches, parents, and fans are educated beyond HS and have white collar jobs. EJs are unheard of. I've called in small working class towns where EJs are abundant. No judgement, just facts.

Demographics differences are noticed by me as well!!

It's funny you mention demographics. I umpire and coach in a rec league that is comprised of mostly working class people and there are a lot of issues with parents getting tossed, suspended, etc. I also umpire in a more affluent area doing Teener and Legion games and I don't hear much from the crowd or the coaches. However, when I do travel ball, which you would assume is comprised of a more white collar demo, I hear all kinds of nasty comments from the stands and some of the coaches. It seems that the younger divisions, 13U and under are the worst. 18/19U is run pretty well and I don't see many problems.

My experience with travel ball is that the more affluent the area a team is from, the more obnoxious their fans.
