LL Majors. Finishing the last 2 innings of a game called due to darkness earlier in the week, then starting another game. HT coach has had attitude all season so far because we went to CBO, and now his team is not crushing everyone like they used to. He also has a habit of questioning calls in a unruly fashion, especially with our new umpires. All other coaches have made the adjustments, and as a whole the games have been more competitive(only 2 games called due to the 10 run rule) and the players happier due to more at-bats.

Anyway, HT coach has a player in the lineup who was found to have been playing with a broken glove hand after last game. Apparently the coach has known about this for the last 2 games, but kept him playing . Our President calls the coaches, my partner, and I over to the fence and tells HT coach the kid cannot play until medically cleared due to liability to the league. HT coach starts yelling at the President and making personal statements to him. President and Coach go back and forth, and Coach is refusing to take the player out. Finally I tell the Coach to take his player off the field and get a sub in so we can play ball. Coach gives me a glare and says he is protesting, and would protest everything we did. My response was "fine, but let's get the kids playing."

Game goes along, and in the last inning HT is down by 16. He only has 12 players in the lineup to bat. I nicely mention that with the CBO he cannot catch up with the number of players in his lineup and tell him he may want to consider that fact since he has another game to play, as well as player safety (average of 4 hit batters per inning so far). He gives me a disgusted look and says "oh, another of your stupid rules." Buh bye, coach. Won't see ya next game either.

Next game starts, and the HT Ass. Coach ( EJ Coach's wife) starts loudly complaining about my strike zone, and the fact I tossed hubby and that she isn't prepared to coach. Stop sign goes up - "That's enough! We are done with this!" She mumbles something inaudible, and I stare at her. She sits down on the bench and lets her assistant handle things from there on. Game finishes with the HT on the short end of the 10 run rule. Karma

This guy has needed to be run for a while, even going back years before I started. He usually doesn't push things too far with me. Just when our less experienced umpires are there.

I found out after the game that the EJ coach was going around trying to drum up support for his cause, but no one was giving him any. He's eligible to return for his team's game Friday. We'll see how that goes. He tends to hold a grudge.

The president of the league tells him the kid can't play and he is going to protest? To whom? See all posts related to idiotic 10 year old coaches for further references.

Sounds like an organization in need of leadership. If I remember correctly, LL managers, coaches and umpires are appointed by a League's President and serve at his/her pleasure. A coach putting players in harms way in order to satisfy their own ego has no business on a field in the first place. If I'm running the league, I tell the coach, see ya, permanently, time for you to go and form your travel ball team now.

Putting my umpire hat on, this is a prime example of what happens when you don't deal with a disruptive coach early and kick it down the road to the next game for someone else to deal with. With some additional info. this would make an interesting case study to train and educate those "less experienced" you mentioned.

If he mentions anything about the previous game on Friday, other than to apologize for his ignorant behavior, run him immediately.

Dump his A$$ at the plate meeting. JK. I wouldn't tolerate a single sigh out of him though. He better act like he's at church. Have your hook ready.
