Alterations On Pants?

Just received my new base and plate pants today and I need some help as my tailoring ability is nill. So far I have had 2 pairs of combos, the first I ripped some how and the second has a hole in it from a iron. After talking with some fellow umpires I was recommended to get something called a "baste stitch" since I can lengthen them in the future if I get new gear. How should I get my pants altered and how long should they be when I am not in my plate stance? Should they be just touching the ground or a inch or so above the ground?

Unless you're very proficient with a needle and thread or a sewing machine or have a mom, aunt, grandma who can do it for you...let a pro do it!

Just about every cleaners do tailoring and alterations....cost anywhere from $8.00-$10.00 a pair....try them on right there in the shop...most guys have the bottom of the pants 1/2 inch from touching the floor.

Flip on an MLB game, and watch the PU. More than likely, when he drops into his stance, the front edge of this pants are just barely touching the tops of his shoes, and the back half is just covering the back of his shoes. THAT'S where you hem your pants. It's actually at a bit of an angle. So take them to a tailor, wear your shin guards, and drop in.

I'd would hem up about 3-4" of material, to make them easier to sell on eBay later, plus they'll drape better with a bit more weight. If you don't have that extra weight, the pants will continually ride on your shin guards.

A warm iron is all that's needed with those easily burned Davis pants. (Now I tell you, right?) Better yet, take them right out of the dryer and hang them up.

Ditch the combos. Look at the pictures on this page for the reason why.

Invest in pro gear.

Of course I'm taking it to a alteration shop, I may be dumb enough to burn a hole in pants with a iron but I am surely not dumb enough to ruin $100 worth of pants.

Consult with your local Community College.

They may have a home economics class you can take to learn how to iron.

Either that or a year hitch in any branch of the military will make you proficient with a iron.

I normally wear a 32-inch inseam on dress slacks. My plate slacks are 32.5 at the front edge, and 33.5 at the back edge. I have my tailor angle them so they fall over the shoes better.
