I tend to agree with you that you can have a FPSR violation without a slide. However, where in the rules does it say you must ............. or run away from the play.

2-32-1: ...A runner may slide or run in a direction away from the fielder to avoid making contact or altering the play of the fielder.

Within the context of the rule, I read it as the runner may do one thing (slide legally) or the other (run away from the fielder). If he does anything else, such as stand in the way of the fielder, or run in his direction, and these acts create contact or alter the play, then he and the BR are both out.

the word must doesn't ever come into it. He has a couple of options that are spelled out to keep him from getting his team mate doubled up. Did he interfere? That really is the question, sliding legally and/or breaking away from the direction that the field is using is all that matters.
