This actually happened last week but finals occupied my computer last week. I've never had this call before and nobody I know have had this call either so I just want to know if I did this right.

R1, i don't remember how many outs. R1 is off on the pitch, catcher throws down, I see F6 do a flipping motion with his glove hand, glove goes airborne and hits the ball in flight. The play would have been close had the F6 been paying attention and covering the bag (12U).

Honestly, I've never learned the proper mechanic for this type of play. I point, call "detached equipment" and award the runner third base. I treated it kind of like obstruction call (pointing and calling obstruction) but I wasn't sure what is the right way.

Any thoughts?

Under fed rules this is a three base award. 8-3-3b : three bases if a batted ball is touched by an illegal glove or mitt, or by detached player equipment which is thrown, tossed, kicked or held by a fielder, provided the ball when touched is on or over fair ground, or is a fair ball while on or over foul ground, or is over foul ground in a situation such that it might become a fair ball.

8-3-4: Illegal use of detached player equipment or an illegal glove/mitt does not cause ball to immediately become dead. If each runner advances to or beyond the base which he would reach as a result of the award, awarded does so at his own risk and may be put out.

7.05© It is a three base award.

You should have scored the runner.

Chance & Semper Fi,

This is a thrown ball, not a batted ball, and kcfan's award of 3B (i.e. a 2 base award) was correct.

kcfan,

In terms of your "mechanics", that sounds good to me and is pretty much what I (hope) I would do in a similar circumstance.

I have never seen the proper mechanic for this demonstrated in any mechanics manual I have read or training I have attended. Your approach strikes me as consistent with what is taught for similar situations.

Thanks UmpJm for the clarification as I misread the op. The two base award is correct under 8-3-3c1.

Good call all the way around.

Remember:

3 for a batted ball

2 for a thrown ball

1 for a pitched ball (OBR only, I don't think it is addressed in fed)

"TIME! I'VE GOT DETATCHED EQUIPMENT. YOU THIRD BASE!" Or something along those lines.

No, this is a DDB, since the runners can advance at their own risk.

Point with right hand, "That's detached equipment," wait for play to end, award bases. You got it right.

That is exactly right.
