I umpire some inner city and public park games that have bases that move(they are not posted into the ground) and I am asking for a rule reference on bases that are moved by a runner sliding into a base and by the force of his slide the bag or his foot moves into the fielder. I am perplexed by the rule for oversliding...I can see if the base is posted into the ground but what about these bases that move. What is the proper NFHS rule on this problem?

To be more specific In the case of a runner sliding into second on an attempted double play and the base becomes dislogded and his foot the base and the fielder become entangled....do you call the runner and the BR both out or just the baserunner?

If the base kicks loose then the area where it supposed to be is where the runner and any other runners should go to. The umpire has to judge whether they have gone to the right spot. Be very, very liberal in that spot.

On the slide at second, if he slides at the base then the onlt way I have anything is if he slides through the spot and hits the fielder behind the base.

NFHS bags has to be secured so there is no movable base rule.8-8-14 is your closest bet, the base if dislodged is considered to follow the runner and the runner is protected unless they try to advance. So unless something else about the slide other than going farther than normal that is illegal occurs, or judge that the runner intentionally interferes, its legal.

Best way to judge if they tried to take out the fielder behind is if they hit the dirt within 2 foot or so of the bag. Go to a field where there are fixed bags and after a game, you'll see the slide marks in the dirt starting at least 4 feet from the bag.

Rule 8-8-14 NFHS SB Runner is not out:

The runner slides into a base and dislodges it from its proper position. The base is considered to have followed the runner.

Only in New Jersey. Just kidding, we have some pretty crappy fields in the city too. Most schools use the Chicago Park District fields. No raised mound, all dirt infields, no chalk (CPS doesn't know what chalk is). Oh and it's always fun when a group of people just walks through the outfield to get to their homes behind the bushes in center (Stewerd Park is infamous for this). Can't beat it. Or when a line drive to center hits the center fielder from another youth game going on at the same time kiddy corner to our diamond. I mean it's only varsity baseball, what can you expect.

Notice I said NFHS SB. The BR-Runner rule has 10 sections in softball. Dont have the BB book on me.

Quoting SB rules in a majority-BB forum can be dangerous. There are many rules in SB that different in BB, and vice-versa.
