To all:

First and foremost, ...all I did was ask a question, ...go look at the OP.

Second, zm1283 (in my eyes) sent a dig because I posted it ...

Third: My question regarding what age is being umpired has nothing to do with a question of someone's experience. Where I was going was ...like something I had said earlier .... "I wouldn't walk onto the field of a u12 travel game with a black jersey and a navy ball bag." My question to zm1283 was going to be the same....would he do that? Expecting him to say no, thus reinforcing how I look at it ....

I post these things as discussion points of interest that I think we'd all like and or notice. I don't expect to be ribbed for it. It's all in the name of, ...'hey guys , did you notice?' 24 posts later, ...look what we have ...

Thunder, it's October, I live in the Pacific NW... it's cold and rainy, I haven't been on a field since July. You could start a thread on the best tool to notch the strike wheel on your indicator and I'd happily read about it. keep up the good work. 1

I worked a non-league opener between two powerhouses to open my break-out high school season. It was part of a twin-bill of evaluation games, so the first game's crew's post-game took place during our pre-game. The first thing the evaluator said to the plate umpire was, "Why are you wearing blue bags with a black shirt?" And then he turned to the base umpire and asked him, "Why are you wearing a jacket, when he's wearing a short-sleeve shirt?"

So it matters to the guy who gives you your high school schedule. And that's the minimum standard to abide by. The assignors of the college conferences will drop you for that and less! It's absurd, but it's like the military. They say do it, you do it. And not taking liberties with your uniform is your primary test.

So this crew got grilled for something that some say doesn't matter to the average fan!

Well, let me tell you, after the crew left the locker room, a group of fans gathered outside peppered and them with the same questions about their uniform choices. So I learned right then not to push the standards, because the fans will notice, and then, well, it can get rough is all I'll say. The respect of the fans is one of the main reasons we umpire. So I completely hid my blue ball bags away so I will never have a Fieldin Culbreth situation.

Fans only care about us or notice us when we do something that goes against their team.

Their opinions don't matter, but they don't have an opinion on our uniforms because they don't notice them in the first place.

(This is assuming you don't walk on the field with holes in your pants or tobacco stains all over your shirt)

You're correct. The average person would never notice that the ball bag isn't exactly the same color as the shirt.

ZM;

I understand where you're trying to go, but ....I have a question for you...... What age group do you typically work?

HS Varsity up to D2.

I'm not trying to dig on you, I just think it is a bit silly to start threads because someone's ball bag is a little faded.

I wouldn't walk on a U12 field with a black shirt and navy bag, but I can see other umpires doing it. I'm not saying anyone should do it, but I can see where some guys wouldn't know any better, or maybe the navy bag is all they have at the time. Guys, I absolutely agree that looking the part and dressing right is half the battle, and looking sharp helps you convince them you have a clue even before the game starts. With that said, the people playing and coaching are more worried about whether or not we are worth a damn calling outs/safes and balls/strikes than they are about our uniform. Like I said, walk on the field with holes in your pants and they will notice. Walk on the field wearing a navy hat and navy ball bags with the polo/pro blue shirt....no one has a clue. Again, I would not do it, but I have seen umpires that have and no one was the wiser.

Calling me "John" wasn't a dig ?!? :) No biggie. The point was, ...did you , and/or would you, expect to see what I posted on an MLB field? Answer: No. So, like I said before, I thought it a point of interest.

I can certainly live with that!! :) I'd just hope you'd see that my intent was of interest, as with most of my posts.....

I haven't used blue ball bags in years. If I am forced to wear dark blue I use black bags. I think the dk blue looks horrible with the charcoal pants, which all I wear now. When I wore heather I used grey bags. I saw an umpire wear heather bags with charcoal pants and I gave him a fit, it looked like crap. As far as the guy complaining about the base guy wearing a jacket with the PU wearing a shirt, that's BS. Sometimes on the bases it is acceptable for him to wear a jacket. The opposite is not true.

In fact, MLB does it constantly. It was done in the NLCS I believe Friday night. PU had light blue short sleeve on while the BUs had long sleeve black jackets on. I think it is BS too. Apparently though, those guys were doing something good if all that is noticed is their attire.

Well as we all know with all the extra gear on it gets warmer behind the plate... this is why most of the time the Pu is wearing a short sleeve..and while your on the bases, and not moving as much, you will not stay as warm. ( hence the jacket)
