I've said it once, and I'll say it one more time. I'm not good enough to tell what hit what first. I will use proper timing to read the hitter's reaction and I'm going to make my call and stick with the call I make.

This play is all about taking time to read. My initial reaction to these plans is to make an instantaneous call instead of taking a second or two and observe "the rest of the play" and then make my call... It's nothing till you call it, but this is another one of those situations where I want to rush to make a call.

You've already done the two key elements of blowing a call, 1) you realize your error and 2) you've learned from it.

We've all made mistakes and those of us that care bring them up with trusted advisors to ensure we learn and get it right the next time. You are already a better umpire because of it.

One of the best things I learned from an old guy when I joined the HS group was to look up anything that you questioned during a game. If you got it wrong, you won't get it wrong again.
